Gottman Method Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy in Warrensburg, NY & Telehealth Throughout New York & Florida

Build a Stronger Relationship With the Help of a Trained Couples Therapist

When communication breaks down, the same arguments keep happening. You and your partner feel increasingly disconnected, and it can be difficult to know how to move forward.

Couples therapy can help you understand the patterns that are keeping you stuck, develop healthier ways of communicating, resolving conflict, and reconnecting.

I'm Richard Yerry, LCSW-R, a psychotherapist who has been practicing since 2012. I have specialized in couples therapy for the past four years and have completed Level 2 training in the Gottman Method, a research-based approach to understanding and improving relationships.

In-person and telehealth appointments are available.

When You Feel Stuck, There Is a Way Forward

Most couples don't come to therapy because they simply need to learn "how to communicate." Almost everyone says that when they call.

Usually, there's more going on beneath the surface.

Perhaps you're having the same argument over and over without resolving anything. Maybe one partner feels criticized or unheard while the other feels dismissed or alone. You may have become emotionally distant, lost your sense of connection, or found yourselves struggling with intimacy. You've entered the dreaded "roommate or coworker" phase of the relationship.

Sometimes a significant event has changed the relationship. Other couples aren't in crisis at all, they simply recognize that their relationship could be stronger.

Whatever brings you to therapy, our work begins with understanding your relationship, your patterns, and what each of you needs in order to move forward.

Gottman Method-Informed Couples Therapy

My approach to couples therapy is informed by the Gottman Method, developed by relationship researchers Drs. John and Julie Gottman.

The Gottman Method is a research-based approach that focuses on the patterns that influence relationship satisfaction and stability. It provides practical tools for improving communication, managing conflict, strengthening friendship and emotional connection, and creating a healthier relationship.

I have completed Level 2 Gottman Method training and incorporate Gottman-informed assessment and interventions into my work with couples.

Rather than taking sides or determining who is "right," my role is to help both partners better understand the dynamics between them and develop new ways of relating to one another.

What Can Couples Therapy Help With?

Couples seek therapy for many different reasons, including:

  • Repeated arguments and unresolved conflict
  • Communication difficulties
  • Emotional distance or loss of connection
  • Intimacy and sexual concerns
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity and relationship ruptures
  • Differences about parenting, finances, or major life decisions
  • Resentment and unresolved hurt
  • Major life transitions
  • Uncertainty about the future of the relationship
  • Separation or the possibility of divorce
  • Strengthening an otherwise healthy relationship

You don't have to wait until your relationship is in crisis to seek help.

A Therapy Approach That Is Structured, Collaborative, and Practical

Couples therapy should NOT be a weekly opportunity to rehash the latest argument.

Our work will focus on understanding the patterns that are creating difficulty in your relationship and developing practical ways to change those patterns.

Depending on your circumstances and goals, therapy may include:

  • Understanding your relationship patterns
  • Identifying cycles of conflict and disconnection
  • Improving communication
  • Learning healthier approaches to conflict
  • Strengthening friendship and emotional connection
  • Addressing unresolved hurts
  • Rebuilding trust
  • Improving intimacy
  • Developing tools you can use between sessions

My goal is to create an environment where both partners feel heard, respected, and understood, while also helping you make meaningful changes in the relationship.

Why Work With Me?

I'm Richard Yerry, LCSW-R, and I've been practicing psychotherapy since 2012. I reside in the Adirondacks with my wife and two kids.

For the past four years, couples therapy has been a significant part of my practice. My Level 2 Gottman Method training provides me with a structured, research-informed framework for couples work, while my broader experience as a psychotherapist allows me to consider the individual experiences, histories, and challenges that each partner brings into the relationship.

I believe effective couples therapy should be warm, honest, collaborative, and focused on meaningful change.

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what's wrong or how to fix it. That's part of what we'll work on together.

What to Expect

Beginning couples therapy can feel intimidating, particularly when there has been a lot of conflict or hurt.

The first step is getting a clearer understanding of what's happening in your relationship and what brought you to therapy.

From there, we'll work together to identify the patterns that are causing distress, clarify your goals, and determine the most useful way to move forward.

Therapy is a collaborative process. You don't have to solve your relationship before you come in.

Traditional Couples Therapy

Traditional couples therapy consists of 90-minute sessions, giving us more time than a standard 50-minute therapy appointment to slow down, understand what's happening, and do meaningful work together.

$300 per 90-minute session

I do not participate with insurance plans, so couples therapy is offered on a private-pay basis.

Both in-person and telehealth appointments are available.

Looking for More Intensive Couples Therapy?

For some couples, weekly 90-minute sessions aren't the right format.

If your relationship is in significant distress, if you're facing a major decision, or if you simply want to devote concentrated time to working on your relationship, an intensive couples therapy format may be a better fit.

I offer intensive (aka marathon) couples therapy sessions ranging from several hours to multiple days.

Ready to Take the First Step?

You don't need to know exactly what needs to change before reaching out.

If you're wondering whether couples therapy might be helpful for your relationship, I invite you to get in touch. Let's talk about your relationship.
